A deliciously twisted black comedy (based on the novel ‘Les liaisons dangereuses’) that transforms a literary classic into a contemporary teen movie. Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar are the wealthy scheming siblings intent on corrupting innocent prey Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair, although even the best laid plans can come undone when meddling with matters of the heart.
Director Roger Kumble transfers an intricate plot of sex and seduction from 18th-century France to 90s New York, with the update proving so successful that two sequels followed (and a proposed TV series maybe still to come). There’s plenty of fun to be had once this wild ride hits its stride, with racy revelations, campy come-uppances, memorable moments, a pre-Oscar-winning Witherspoon and Gellar at the height of her Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. As potent and perverse as ever, this will either provide a nostalgic glow if you’re revisiting as a fan or leave you gasping with surprise if it’s your first time.
