Whatever Next? Random Acts at Somerset House

With each of tonight’s films lasting roughly five minutes, this is a chance to preview some thought-provoking work from the class of 2019.

Expect comedy from Jack Rooke, homoerotic wrestling from Dann Parry, emotional animation from Jenny Wright, paternal confrontation in the Scottish wilderness from Zhang + Knight, and the dulcet tones of Julian Barratt. After the screening, Random Acts’ Jake Cunningham will be joined by some of the directors and stars of the films to talk about their work.

Two wrestlers approach each other to battle for male dominance, but soon the fight descends into something even more animalistic. New animation from Dann Parry, this animated commentary on hyper-masculinity and aggression shows how what can begin as a display of strength, ‘manliness’ and heterosexuality can quickly blur into sexualisation and homoerotism – sometimes the very thing it is trying not to be.

From animator Jenny Wright comes a story about motherhood and loss in an abstracted world of childhood memory, creating a delicate blend of intimacy and emotion, told through beautifully simple line drawings.
